Monday Minute: Trick or Treat, Part 1

October 28, 2013 Leave a comment

Capri_Pants_front_viewJames loves to trick or treat – but despite the garlic breath, he might not be ready for Halloween at all. Every year as the big day gets closer, James gets a little touchy about putting his costume on, even though he’s the one who adamantly picked it out months prior.

For some reason, James has been giving me an especially hard time this year, which is particularly unfortunate since he’s put on about 20 pounds this fall due to a change in medication (totally another story for another time). The whole saga reached a climax with us finally showing up to the trick-or-treating event at Ryan’s work still not having tried the freaking costume on. How did I let it get that far? The following conversation took place the night before. Read more…

Monday Minute: Why would anyone give this gift to a 13 year old?

September 11, 2013 Leave a comment

IMG_0433 (1)James is turning 13 on September 16th (what????) and the gifts have started to arrive. Upon coming home from school James opened a box and read the card (as we have trained him to do) on top first. “Oooohh, I think it’s chopsticks!” he exclaimed, rummaging around inside. A moment later he resurfaced looking confused. “These are not the chopsticks I asked for,” he muttered. I glanced over – James was holding up a stack of neatly folded white washcloths, tied with a bow. He looked into the box again. “What the—?”

Now I was curious, so I got up and peeked. “Espresso cups?” I mused. I read the card, which mentioned that the gift would be good for a sushi-lover like James. “What in the world do you need these for? Someone must have made a mistake, bud,” I announced. “I’ll call your Aunt Nancy and let her know.” Read more…

…one sees mud and the other stars. Beck

Yes, I’m aware I missed posting anything last week. Ryan was home and we really eked every last minute out of our precious staycation. In fact, we’re going to start a new photo album called “The Last Car In The Lot,” in which we are the very last vehicle to leave every beach, waterpark, farm, aquarium, orchard… So I wasn’t home to post anything – I was so busy having fun that it just wasn’t possible.

When we got home from an overnight stay in Long Island last week I stumbled across a post by another mom-blogger I follow, about “the truth.” It was then that I realized I had to come clean. Yes, we had a wonderful and busy week. Yes, we were the very last car in the lot every day. But there’s something else I failed to mention. One of the big reasons I didn’t post anything was because I didn’t have anything witty, lighthearted, touching, even sarcastic-but-all-in-good-fun to say about James for a while there last week, and I was just too tired to fake it. Monday Minute: This Is NOT Fancy

August 22, 2013 1 comment

Makizushi_Tekkamaki_1We survived the trip back from a whirlwind week in Buffalo, but once home needed dinner in a pinch. Naturally, we went to the family standby – sushi. I set the table with small plates to encourage slower consumption and put out chopsticks for flair (and let’s be real here, slower consumption). In any case, I’m sure you won’t have to investigate too hard to discover that I’m not running a 4-star sushi establishment here. Just ask James. Read more…

Monday Minute: Another Instance of James Traumatizing NYC Subway Riders

subwayHonestly, whenever I write a Monday Minute that involves the subway I think to myself, well, it likely won’t get any crazier than this, which is usually about the time I’m proven 100% wrong. But I really think that this time, it can’t get any crazier than this.

For full effect, I’ll skip an intro on this one except to suggest that you pretend you’re sitting next to James on the crowded subway, who is returning home from another fantastic DMF concert. It’s around 6:30PM. Past dinner, past medication time, past reason. Read more…
