This Friday, April 27th – Special Needs Summer Activities and Resources (Final Meeting of the 2011-2012 School Year)!

April 23, 2012 3 comments

I can’t believe it, but this Friday, April 27th, is our final meeting at PS 163 of The Foorce.

Because I sadly have had to cancel Lydia (insufficient funding, trying to reschedule), the meeting this week will be all about providing resources for summer activities and camps – I’ve collected more than a few over the last couple months of camp fairs and conferences and I’m looking to share. This meeting will also offer an opportunity to find out about and sign up for the casual social group that has met weekly for the last 3 summers – absolutely free and a great social outlet if your child isn’t booked up for the summer.

Anyone and everyone with a special needs friend or loved one is invited to join us – the meeting will be from 9:00am until everyone leaves and small children are welcome (I’m bringing 2!). As usual, the meeting will be held at PS 163 (corner of W. 97th and Amsterdam) and will be in the cafeteria or auditorium depending on availability.

Hope to see you on Friday!

A Look At The Week Ahead: Week of 11/6/11

November 5, 2011 Leave a comment

Between Election Day and Veteran’s Day there are only three days of school this week, so with all 3 kids home more than usual I am doing my best not to over-plan. But there is so much to be excited about and so much going on this week that I just can’t help it.

Along with the Monday Minute, Tuesday Top Ten, and Special Needs News, I look forward to telling you about some amazing new places and programs in Brooklyn for special needs kids as well as my visit to PS 165 last week. I’m especially excited to share details about our upcoming December meeting at PS 163, which includes a special holiday twist.

Also not to be missed this week is special guest writer Beth Arky, who offers an informative and insightful perspective on sensory processing issues. And speaking of guest writers, I am excited to be one this Wednesday on Special Happens (thanks for hosting me, Gina)! Last but not least, don’t forget to keep sending in questions for the new Twenty Questions series (see Twenty Questions: About Special Needs Financial Planning for more info).

Remember to turn your clocks back tonight – I hope you are enjoying the “long weekend” as much as we are!

Call for Speakers for the 2011-12 meeting season

Many of you who read my blog have met me at one of the PS 163 cafe meetings over the past 2 years. We have had some really amazing speakers this past school year, and in an effort to outdo myself I am putting out a notice for some of the meeting topics that could benefit from a couple more people.

Right now I am looking for:

1) Parents of special needs children who a) are entering a special needs NYC approved private elementary, middle or high school, or b) have a special needs child who has transitioned from a public school to a private school setting, or c) have a special needs child who resides in a CTT or contained pubic school classroom setting in grades 1-12 who would be willing to sit in a round table discussion about their experience with the school, the search for the right school, the admission process, and answer questions from other parents.

2) Agencies or individuals who provide an extracurricular service to the special needs population, such as sports, music, art, a social skills group, a mentoring program, tutoring, etc.

3) Financial planners or consultants with experience in planning for the future financial needs of families with special needs members.

4) Special needs people with a unique talent in music, art, cooking, athletics, or anything you’d like to mention!

If interested, please email me at msearfoorce@gmail.com with your information so I can fill in a few spots for next year’s meetings. I will post more details regarding each meeting as dates and information becomes available. Also keep an eye out for the post about our Summer group’s first meeting!
