Monday Minute: James meets his match in an awkward conversation showdown

Teppanyaki_chef_cooking_at_a_hibachi_in_a_Japanese_Steakhouse (1)In hibachi land, if you’re sitting near a weirdo you’re stuck for a while.

Apparently I’m holding James back from realizing his true passions. For the sake of this post I will refer to the woman that sat our hibachi table as Surely, short for Surely-you-can’t-be-serious-right-now.”

I rate the following conversation right up there with the whole “rat on your back” subway debacle. I think I sincerely laughed just as hard on the way home. And lady, coming from a parent who has heard everything, that’s saying something.

Monday Minute: This Is NOT Fancy

Makizushi_Tekkamaki_1We survived the trip back from a whirlwind week in Buffalo, but once home needed dinner in a pinch. Naturally, we went to the family standby – sushi. I set the table with small plates to encourage slower consumption and put out chopsticks for flair (and let’s be real here, slower consumption). In any case, I’m sure you won’t have to investigate too hard to discover that I’m not running a 4-star sushi establishment here. Just ask James. Read more…

Monday Minute: Watch Out, Buffalo – Here We Come (No really, watch out)

Security_Screening_at_the_Denver_AirportMe: So are you excited about our plane trip to Buffalo this week?

James: Yeah! How will we get to the airport?

Me: Well, first we’ll get a taxi there.

James (pumps fist in the air) Ohhh, yeah!

Me: Then we’ll go stand in line for tickets.

James: Yessssssss!

Me: Then we’ll go through security. Read more…

Monday Minute: What do Babies, Police Officers and Ramen Noodles have in common?

SSPX0244Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But yet here we are on the bus today:

Margaret: Can I pick up Ian?

Me: We’re on the bus, not now.

Margaret: I can hold him under the armpits – I won’t drop him!

Me: Maybe when you’re 5 years old.

Margaret: Okay!

James: Can I hold Ian when I’m 12….

Me: You are 12, in fact, you’re almost 13!

James: Oh, yeah. Can I hold Ian?

Me: Not on the bus, when we get home you can. So, what do you think you’ll do when you’re 13? Read more…

Special Needs Dance Classes for NYC Kids

Independence Day 1783, I mean, er, 2013

Fireworks_over_the_East_Village_of_New_York_City (1)Today was momentous for many reasons – yes, it’s the 4th of July, but it’s also the first year that James voluntarily came down to watch fireworks on TV with us. We didn’t ask, he offered. And, despite the cacophony of noise outside right now (are fireworks actually illegal in NY?) he has not come down weeping once (yet), as he has done every other year.

Watching James take in the Macy’s fireworks show on NBC tonight was a show in itself – here are some of the highlights. (Disclaimer: I do not have anything against England, and to my knowledge, neither does James.) Read more…
