We’re hoping to have our biggest team yet this year and have some real competitors in the running divisions (no pressure, guys). The event is truly family friendly, with programs for children 2 and up and walkers/runners of ALL ages. There’s also a Kid’s Zone with Play Area, complete with face painting, sand art, dancing, live music, and games. photo (2)

Each year we’ve had so much fun and love meeting new people – we encourage you to invite your own family and friends to join The Foorce too! If you are unable to join us but would like to support us you can visit our team website – every dollar is appreciated more than you know (and is 100% tax deductible)! We have not yet reached our goal of $1,000 but I know we will. Don’t have a dollar to spare? Well wishes, happy thoughts and prayers are also all appreciated :)

A Look At What’s Ahead – Special Weekend Edition

October 14, 2011 Leave a comment

October is halfway over, which is just unbelievable, partly because we have been so incredibly busy and partly because it has been so freaking hot out. Fall, where are you? We went apple picking last weekend and were all sweating and filthy by the time we got home.

I acknowledge that my “personal” posts have been, for lack of a better word, missing. Despite what it looks like, I have been reading survey entries (see right sidebar) and am listening to requests for more personal stories. To prove it, here is a sneak peek at what’s coming up!

The Bucket and the Mandrake: Two Small Stories, One Big Lesson – two examples of sibling heroism in our family. **This post will be featured on The Squashed Bologna on Saturday.**

Patience and Foortitude: I Love You, Machine Gun Mouth – If you think I have a lot to say, then you haven’t walked James to school. An actual excerpt from one of our walks followed my my own insightful analysis into why saying “I love you” back can become a chore.

I Would Live Off Of Chinese Food If I Could –  my response to those who say James should not have to do homework, follow rules or use manners because he’s disabled. This will also be a guest post – exact date TBA.

(Extra) Special Event Announcement – tune in this weekend to see how you can help make a fabulous, once-in-a-lifetime potential meeting become a reality!

So, as you can see, lots going on and lots more to come. On top of these posts, I will be starting to tour special needs middle schools in a few weeks and will be posting reviews after each one, so for those of you in the same crazy, scary boat as us, stay tuned. And, our first meeting is coming up in one little week (October 21, 9am). Make sure to check Upcoming Events (see menu above) for more information about upcoming meetings and, well, events (creative, I know).

New Page Added: Upcoming Events

In an effort to get more organized I have added an Upcoming Events page. You will now be able to check there for information about upcoming meetings and other Foorce events like the Central Park Challenge.

There is a lot going on at The Foorce these days (part of the reason that I haven’t been posting as much as I’d like to lately), so keep an eye out for the new and exciting things being planned!

Carnegie Hall Benefit Concert on November 10, 2011

Best Buddies New York is a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. And this amazing nonprofit is being honored in an equally fantastic benefit at Carnegie Hall next month.

As with many special events, tickets are a little pricey, but it’s for causes like these that the benefit far outweighs the cost.

I am anxious about James going to middle school next year on many levels, but Best Buddies is one thing I’m actually looking forward to him aging into!

Hope to see you at one event or another this week!
