Special Needs Sitter, Tutor, Buddy: This Penny is Worth a Million!

I’m not sure she would appreciate my little pun, but I am very excited to have found Penny! We hired her to work with James this summer, and she is exactly the young, energetic person I was hoping to find. Penny has volunteered for several of James’s special needs athletic teams, so James is already familiar with her, and so are we for that matter. She is going to work with James a couple of times per week this summer on some academic areas, but also play games and do outdoor activities with him as well. She’s also going to help us with the whole bike-riding dream I have.

I have included a short introduction written by Penny, in case you are looking for a similar situation this summer and would like to hire her (as long as it isn’t full time!). You can her at pensav93@gmail.com if you are interested or want more information.

From Penny:

I am 17 years old, going into my Senior year of high school at Columbia Preparatory School on the UWS.   I have been working with kids for about six years now.  I have been babysitting for the same family since I was 11 years old, they now have two boys, six and two.  Also, I have participated in the West Side Soccer League’s division for children with special needs, Basketball Buddies with Ken McGrory’s division for children with special needs, and I worked at the JCC summer camp the summer of 2010 for the University division for kids with special needs.  I am comfortable tutoring in just about every subject except Science.  I have taken Spanish for four years now and would be comfortable tutoring in that.  I love playing and teaching sports and any other types of games or activities.

Snatch her up now – there are only so many days in a week and we have claimed two of them!

Summer Job Opportunity – part-time flexible hours

Here’s a little sneak peek into some of my summer plans:

We are looking for someone to spend 2 days per week, approximately 3 hours per visit, with James this summer – July and August. His main diagnoses are PDD-NOS, ADD and global developmental delays. James is fairly high functioning, eager to please and has a sweet personality – make sure you ignore any posts I write complaining about him and focus on my Do You Have A Top Ten post!

We prefer someone young, patient and energetic who has prior experience working with special needs children. College students with any related experience (PT, OT or Speech) a plus, though extremely mature high school students will be considered as well. One day per week needs to be Wednesdays from 11:30-2:30, the other day is negotiable/flexible.

We would like this person to work part of the time on academic skills through engaging activities (think math games), and the other part spent outside focusing on physical activity and fitness. One of our goals this summer is for James to learn how to ride a bike, and boy would I love help with this!

There is the potential for extra hours to babysit all of my children some evenings or weekends if that appeals to you in any way. We live on the UWS in the low 100s, with easy access to the subway. We would like to have any possible sitters over for a little introduction (coffee, lunch, dinner, milk and cookies) prior to starting to make sure it is a good fit for both child and sitter. Interview sounds way too formal. And, if you can’t get through the first meeting don’t call us, we’ll call you.

Seriously though, if you are interested in working with James this summer please send me an email with a little info about yourself and your going rate. Or, if you have someone you’d like to recommend please send their name and info to msearfoorce@gmail.com or better yet, forward them this post.
