Another good reference for special needs programs around NYC
I love Mommy Poppins and generally use it as a reference for my younger two children and for family activities around the city, but the site also has the occasional special needs resource. The link below has information about academic classes, sports programs and some unique therapies like hippotherapy (horseback riding) around the city.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio launched a survey for parents and guardians of students with disabilities. The link to the survey is http://advocate.nyc.gov/2011parentsurvey
The survey is open from now until April 30, 2011. Currently the website has the survey both in English and Spanish; at local events our staff will have hard copies available in English, Spanish, Hebrew, Creole and Mandarin.

2011 Young Child Expo – April 7-8
Taken from the website:
“It is our great pleasure to present the 8th Annual Young Child Expo & Conference 2011 – a joint project of Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education and Los Niños Services. Our goal is simple – to provide useful information to professionals and parents in order to help all young children learn, grow and reach their full potential. Our conference brings over 800 people together across all kinds of programs, disciplines, and interest areas from speech pathologists to parents, to those working in children’s museums, day care centers, preschools, and those working with children who have autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or other special needs. In one unique event, this conference integrates learning about typically developing children as well as those with special needs, including autism.”
Is anyone going this year or has anyone gone previously? Looks good but probably not feasible with the kids this week. For more info about the conference go to http://www.youngchildexpo.com

Some of you might remember meeting Kimberly Busi, Director and Sarah Clay, Associate Director at one of our recent meetings. For those of you who may not be familiar with The Quad, I have pasted a summary from their website, http://www.thequadmanhattan.com, below:
“The Quad Manhattan is an educational and recreational center dedicated to a Twice Exceptional model of learning. The term “Twice Exceptional” or 2e refers to children who have gifts or talents in one area (one exception) yet have cognitive or social learning differences (the other exception). Following 2e best practices, The Quad is truly individualized, differentiating for BOTH strengths and differences. While some may NEED this model to meet their academic and social potential, it is our belief that ALL children benefit from it. Through our unique classes, highly sophisticated instruction and individualized support , The Quad builds an inclusive community of tolerance and respect for all members of the family.”
The Quad has a sensory gym, a lot of really unique pre-school and school age classes and programs including film-making, robotics workshops, gaming, doll making, dancing and martial arts, and tutoring services. They are located at 54 Reade Street in Manhattan.
