Independence Day 1783, I mean, er, 2013

Fireworks_over_the_East_Village_of_New_York_City (1)Today was momentous for many reasons – yes, it’s the 4th of July, but it’s also the first year that James voluntarily came down to watch fireworks on TV with us. We didn’t ask, he offered. And, despite the cacophony of noise outside right now (are fireworks actually illegal in NY?) he has not come down weeping once (yet), as he has done every other year.

Watching James take in the Macy’s fireworks show on NBC tonight was a show in itself – here are some of the highlights. (Disclaimer: I do not have anything against England, and to my knowledge, neither does James.)

—–

James: Happy Birthday, America! Say it, Margaret!

Margaret: Happy Birthday–

James: No, not singing it. Just say it, Happy Birthday to little America!

—–

James: Man, look at those fireworks!

Me: Beautiful, right?

James: Yeah, America used those fireworks to defeat Britain, right?

Me: Sorry?

James: Those fireworks blew up Britain! We defeated the British with our fireworks!

Me: No, I don’t think they used fireworks.

—-

James: Man, I love Taylor Swift.

Me: How do you know who that is?

James: I don’t know, I just know her, Mom.

—–

James: Happy Birthday, America.

Me: That’s nice, James.

James: Yeah, Britain, we’re going to blow you up and win the war with these fireworks!

Me: James, the war is over.

James: Oh, yeah….Because these fireworks blasted Britain out of the war.

Me: James, they didn’t use fireworks.

James: Maybe bottle rockets.

—-

Me: Okay, guys, time for bed!

Adam: I love fireworks.

Me: Me, too.

Adam: Can we go see them next time.

James: Sure!

Me: Really?

James: Yeah…….. nah. No. I meant no, okay? Maybe another time.

—-

Me: Good night.

James: Night mom. Hey, mom.

Me: Yeah?

James: Think we won tonight?

Me: Oh, yeah.

YEAH for James! Do you know how many times I had to walk Kathryn all the way back from the fireworks to my parent’s house? He did an excellent job even watching them!
