Monday Minute: A Quick Lesson About Getting Mugged

James is in italics and my responses are in bold.

(Walking to school this morning)

Bowser Junior got grounded, Mom.

Oh yeah?

Yeah he was grounded!

That’s too bad for him – do you know what grounded is?

What?

It’s when you behave badly and lose your privileges. Like if you lost your Wii, or ipod or TV because you were talking back. When you’re grounded you don’t have a lot to do except for staying in your room, punished.

Oh, like getting mugged.

….what?

Like when you’re mugged.

Where did you hear the word mugged?

I don’t know. Can you take those gloves off and put them on my hands? Because my hands are freezing – brrr!

Sure, just give them back to me when we get to school. Do you know what mugged is?

What? When you get in trouble?

Well, it is trouble because bad people take your things and say they will hurt you if you don’t give them all of your stuff.

Like all of my toys?

Well, like your ipod, or your phone, or your money or even your coat and shoes. If that ever happens you just give them your things and have someone call 911 because mugging someone is a crime.

They will choke you if you don’t give them your phone?

Choke you? I don’t know, they might hurt you if you don’t give them your stuff – let’s change the subject. Mugging is really bad.

Kind of like when I took those gloves from you right?

No, James, it is not like that at all. Borrowing from somebody and mugging somebody are very, very different.

Because I have to give them back when we get to school?

Yes, and because you asked me nicely if you could borrow them.

And I didn’t choke you.

Right, and that.
